How to use Your EPC to Save Money
Introduction
With many homeowners feeling the crunch of high mortgage rates and energy bills at least one of these expenses can be reduced by the review of your EPC. The EPC can be viewed as an inconvenient formality or process in owning a home, however if reviewed carefully it can be quite helpful in highlighting how to reduce your energy bills.
Changes you could make
On every EPC there is a section entitled, “changes you could make.” In this section recommendations are made on renovations that can be completed on the property to save on your energy bills. Most commonly these include but are not limited to internal or external insulation, low energy lighting, solar installation, and installation of double glazing. There are a multitude of low to high-cost changes that can be made with varying levels of savings benefits. In addition, the EPC will also highlight the overall EPC score that your property might achieve after the renovation.
Changes you make to a property are not only beneficial to reducing your energy bills but also make the property more sustainable in the form of ensuring efficient use of energy.
Environmental Context
At the latest round of climate talks in Egypt, COP27, the 2022 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction finds that the built environment accounted for over 34 per cent of energy demand and around 37 per cent of energy and process-related CO2 emissions in 2021.
